The Power of Music for Emotional Healing and Inner Calm

Published: 25 April 2026

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure how to shift your mood, music can be a simple and powerful healing tool. Music can help you release emotions, calm your mind, manifest, and reconnect with yourself in a way that is easy and fun.

In this blog, we’ll explore how to use music (including mantras, Solfeggio Frequencies, and Baroque music), to intentionally feel more balanced, supported, and aligned as you move toward living your Best Life – no matter where you start from.

Have you ever noticed how one song can completely change your mood?

In just a few seconds, music can lift you up, calm you down, or bring emotions to the surface that you didn’t even realise you were holding onto.

That’s the quiet power of music.

Music isn’t just something we listen to in the background.  It can be a gentle, powerful tool to help you heal, reconnect with yourself, and move toward a life that feels more aligned, peaceful, and joyful.

A friend of mine in yoga teacher training was doing a Masters degree in Music Therapy.  She could play multiple instruments, sang beautifully, and she decided that’s what she wanted to focus on.  I was intrigued, and as I have felt the healing power of music myself (alone, and with my friend), I thought I’d do a blog on it.

Why Music Is So Healing

Music connects directly to your emotions.  It doesn’t need logic, or some long explanation.  It simply moves through you.  You feel the music, and you can feel the change in your mind, body, and spirit.

Music can be a great healing tool.

I’ve found that when life feels overwhelming, confusing, or heavy, music can help you in a number of ways, such as the points mentioned below.

  • Release emotions you’ve been holding in

  • Feel understood, and less alone

  • Shift your energy and mood (in so many ways!)

  • Reconnect with your inner self

I've discovered that sometimes, when words fail, music speaks.

And often… it says exactly what your heart needed to hear.

Common Challenges Music Can Help With

There are many challenges in human life that music, in its variety of forms, can help with.  Many people walk through life feeling:

  • Overwhelmed and mentally exhausted

  • Disconnected from themselves

  • Stuck in overthinking or self-doubt

  • Unsure how they truly feel

I’ve been using music intentionally the past few months to help me manage my emotions, and state.  For example, if I’m frustrated, I tend to listen to ‘heavier’ music, to let it out, so that I feel calmer and more relaxed and ready to face the day.  Alternatively, if I’m feeling tired, I can listen to inspirational music with a great beat, to get my emotions involved.  And sometimes I just want to relax, and turn off my mind – in which case either gentle instrumental music, or classical, or meditation music – or even mantras – work well.  It all depends on where I’m starting from, and what emotional state I wish to be in (eg. I need to go out, or get things done, or just relax).

Music creates a safe space to feel without pressure.

It allows you to gently sit with your emotions instead of pushing them away.  This could involve feeling the stronger emotions, and releasing them from your body (eg. I like to release any anger or frustration with some ‘heavier’ music, such as Linkin Park).  I find that a exercise and music are both great tools for releasing stress and other heavier emotions from your body.

And releasing emotions from your mind, body, and soul is much healthier than allowing them to fester within you, and cause potential problems from the unexpressed anger or frustration.  So although expressing yourself through music may sound simple, in many ways, it’s where some real healing begins.

Different Ways Music Can Support Your Healing

As you can imagine, not all music is used the same way.  There are a number of different ways you can use music to support your healing.  The trick is to choose the music that matches what you need in the moment.

1. To Release Emotions

Sometimes you don’t need to ‘fix’ how you feel — you just need to let it out.  I discovered this pretty early in life.  I was listening to much ‘heavier’ music than anyone else in my family listened to.  I found it to be a great tool for releasing heavier emotions, such as anger or frustration.

The best (and most obvious) way is to listen to songs that match your mood.  However, there are also styles of music that are great for specific purposes.  I’ve provided various examples below.

  • Sad music when you feel heavy (I have a playlist called ‘yearning’ which has lots of power ballads, allowing me to feel deeply into my emotions while singing them out).

  • Angry music when you feel frustrated (I often ran while listening to heavier music — and by the end of it, I usually felt much lighter and happier).

  • Relaxing instrumental music when you feel unbalanced, or ‘out of whack’.  You can also use specific frequencies of music (such as solfeggio frequencies — see more in the References/Further Reading section below).

  • Study music — the Baroque period of classical music is recommended here.  And yes, I did find it helpful while studying.  I found Baroque music could distract me from whatever I was thinking/worrying about, and instead focus on what I was supposed to spending my time and energy on. (I’ve got some articles on this at the end of the blog post.)

The common benefit of each of these, is that it allows your mind, body, and soul to feel, breathe, and perhaps cry (if needed) — or to simply sit with it.  Each of these is beneficial in their own way.

It’s important to note that this isn’t weakness — it’s emotional release.  And emotional release is essential if you don’t want to hold your emotions in your body — for sometimes years to come.

2. To Calm Your Mind

If your mind is racing, gentle music is one way to help slow everything down.  This could be:

  • Soft instrumental music

  • Nature sounds

  • Slow, calming melodies

Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and allow your body to soften.

This is especially helpful before sleep or during moments of anxiety.

You could also use mantras, which are especially helpful when you want to focus on a specific frequency, such as manifestation, or peace.

I came to love some mantras while studying Kundalini Yoga, although to be fair some of them did take some getting used to — and I suspect I would have resisted listening to them had I not been studying.  (More information on this can be found in my blog Meditation for the Soul: A Simple Path to Inner Peace, as well as some links at the end of the blog.)

3. To Lift Your Energy

Music can shift your state quickly.

If you feel flat or stuck, play something uplifting, and move your body — even just a little.

Dance in your kitchen.  Sway.  Tap your feet. And no, you don’t need to do it perfectly.  Just let your body respond naturally.

Alternatively, if you’re feeling a lot of frustration, you might like to put on some stronger music, and go for a run (or even sing at the top of your lungs if you’re alone in the house!) 😊

Joy often returns through movement.  (And yes, I’ve often gone for a run with heavier music and a stronger beat feeling frustrated and/or angry, and by the time I return, I’m feeling peaceful. Running and singing to the emotional music allows me to express my feelings, so by the end I've cleared them all, and feel at peace.)

4. To Reconnect With Yourself

Over time, we often come to associate certain songs with a feeling like ‘home.’  They remind you of who you are beneath the noise of everyday life.  They may come about differently for each person, however, they can generate the same feeling.

If you can, create a playlist that reflects:

  • Your values (eg. ‘Money don’t cost a thing’ by Jennifer Lopez)

  • Your dreams (eg. ‘Dreams’ by Gabrielle)

  • The person you’re becoming (eg. ‘Masterpiece’ by Jessie J.)

There are some songs that remind me that I’m still learning; others that remind me to reach for the stars; others that speak of great friendships or relationships.  It may take some time to reflect on songs, and collate a playlist, however it could be well worth the time and effort.

Once you have compiled that playlist, listen to it when you feel lost or unsure.  Let it guide you back to yourself.

How to Use Music Intentionally (A Simple Practice)

Here’s a gentle way to bring music into your daily life as a healing tool:

Step 1 - Check in with yourself
Ask yourself ‘How am I feeling right now?’

Step 2 - Choose your music
Pick something that either:

  • Matches your mood (to release), or

  • Gently shifts your mood (to support change)

Step 3 - Be present
Put your phone (or book) aside.  Close your eyes if it feels safe to do so.  Just listen.

Step 4 - Let your body respond
Breathe, cry, relax, or move — whatever feels natural.

Step 5 - Reflect (optional)
Afterwards, ask yourself ‘What changed? How do I feel now?’

This can take just a few minutes, but it can make a big difference.

Creating Your ‘Best Life’ Playlist

One beautiful way to use music is to create your own ‘Best Life Playlist.’  I gave three examples of potential songs above (eg. ‘Love don’t cost a thing’ by Jennifer Lopez; ‘Dreams’ by Gabrielle, or ‘Masterpiece’ by Jessie J.)

As everybody has different values, dreams, and goals, each of our playlists will differ.  To get you started, have a think about songs that:

  • Inspire you

  • Bring you peace

  • Remind you of your strength, and

  • Help you feel hopeful and grounded

This playlist then becomes your go-to space when life feels uncertain.  You can play it again and again — and modify it whenever you feel it needs an update.

It’s like emotional support… in musical form.

A Gentle Reminder

Music won’t solve everything overnight.  However, it will support you on your journey.

It will sit with you in your hardest moments.

It will celebrate with you in your happiest ones.

And it can gently guide you back to yourself, again and again, allowing you to take additional small consistent actions (eg. healthy food, good boundaries, and taking steps towards your ideal life) that will add up to a gradual yet definite change over time.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to have everything figured out to start feeling better.  Small, consistent actions taken often help move you forward.  And sometimes, all it takes is pressing play.

Let music hold you.
Let it move through you.
Let it remind you of who you are.

Because when you learn to support your emotions in simple, loving ways… you begin to create a life that feels calmer, clearer, and more like you.

And that’s what living your Best Life is all about.

🙋 Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does music help with healing?

Music works by connecting you directly with your emotions.  It can help you release feelings, calm your mind, and shift your mood.  When used intentionally, music can be a powerful way to support emotional healing, and feel more balanced.

2. What kind of music is best for healing?

There’s no one ‘right’ type of music.  The best music for healing depends on how you feel.

  • If you feel sad, slower or emotional songs can help you release

  • If you feel anxious, calming or instrumental music can help you relax

  • If you feel low, uplifting songs can help lift your energy

  • Solfeggio Frequencies can also be helpful is aligning your mood more directly

Trust what feels right for you.

3. Can music really help with anxiety and stress?

Yes, music can help calm your nervous system, and slow down racing thoughts.  Soft, gentle music, or nature sounds can help your body relax, especially when combined with deep breathing.  On the other hand, if you’re feeling frustrated, stronger music might work better for you.

4. What if I don’t feel anything when I listen to music?

That’s completely okay.  Sometimes, if you’ve been overwhelmed for a while, it can take time to reconnect with your emotions.  Start small.  Try different types of music, and give yourself space without pressure.  The feeling will come back in its own time.

5. How often should I use music for healing?

You can use music as often as you like.  Even a few minutes a day can help.  You might listen in the morning to set your mood, during the day to reset, or at night to relax and unwind.

6. Should I listen to music that matches my mood or changes it?

Both can be helpful.

  • Matching your mood helps you release emotions

  • Changing your music helps shift your energy

You can start by matching your mood, then gently move to something more uplifting if it feels right.

7. What if certain songs trigger strong emotions?

This can happen, and it’s not a bad thing.  It often means your body is ready to release something.  Go gently.  If it feels too intense, pause, take a few deep breaths, or switch to softer music.  You get to choose what feels best for you at any given time.

8. Can music help me feel more connected to myself?

Yes.  Music can help you slow down, and go within to listen to yourself.  Songs that reflect your values, dreams, and true self can help you reconnect with who you are, and what matters most to you.

9. How do I create a healing playlist?

This can be a fun thing to do.  I like to have a few playlists, for various moods.  One is softer and gentler, another is stronger, and another one helps me aim for a particular mood.  You can start by choosing songs that:

  • Make you feel safe or understood

  • Help you release emotions

  • Bring you peace or hope

  • Reflect the life you want to create

You can update your playlist as you grow and change, or as new songs become available that fit the playlist’s theme.

10. What if I don’t have time to sit and listen to music?

You don’t need a lot of time.  You can listen while driving, walking, cooking, or getting ready.  The key is to be a little more present with it, even for a few moments.

11. Can I combine music with other healing practices?

Yes, music works beautifully with other practices like journaling, meditation, breathwork, or gentle movement (eg. yin or restorative yoga, or walking).  It can deepen your experience and help you feel more supported.   (I love yin yoga, and wrote about the benefits of this gentler style here:  Create Space in Your Body and Mind with Yin Yoga.)

12. How long does it take to feel the benefits of music?

Sometimes you can feel a shift within minutes.  Other times, it builds over time.  The more you use music intentionally, the more you’ll notice its calming, uplifting, and/or grounding effects.
