Have you ever wondered why some people seem to always look on the bright side, even when things aren't going well?  The secret lies in their mindset.  Developing a positive mindset isn’t just about having happy thoughts – your mindset underpins how you experience life.  On the whole, people who feel successful and fulfilled (and living their Best Life), usually have a positive mindset - where they can look on the bright side, without ignoring the downside. 

And yes, sometimes it takes work - it takes consistent practice.  However, I've found that it is worth it.  I always feel happier, and freer, and more able to find opportunities and complete what I set out to do, when I have a positive mindset.

In this blog, we’ll explore why cultivating a positive mindset is so important, and share some simple, actionable steps you can take to make it a part of your daily routine.

Why a Positive Mindset Matters

A positive mindset influences not just how we see the world, but also how we respond to it.

Our own life experiences, beliefs, and perceptions, all impact how each of us sees things, and also influences how we react to each situation.  For example, if we’ve been short-changed in the past, we might double-check this going forward, more wary and aware, after that earlier experience.  On the other hand, if somebody has had more positive experiences, and hasn’t felt short-changed, they might have a different mindset, and experience.  The first mindset is more focused on the ‘fairness’ aspect, always on the look-out for being ‘ripped off’ – while the other person might instead focus on the person’s smile, and the nice day.  Same experience, different mindset – and different feelings experienced as a result (potentially fear and suspicion of being ‘ripped off’ vs. smiling and sunshine).  One person is focusing on fear and caution, while the other person is focusing on kindness and sunshine.

Have you felt both of these mindsets?  Sometimes we end up focusing on the less desirable traits of an experience (the so-called 'negative'), while other times we focus on the more positive aspects.  I know I've done both, however I also noticed that the more consistently I practice a positive mindset, the happier I feel, and the better my life seems to go (which could be considered mindset, but that's fine).   

There are a number of key benefits you can experience if you adopt a more positive outlook.

  1. Improved Mental Health - A positive mindset helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. You’re more likely to focus on solutions rather than problems, which helps keep you calm even in challenging situations.  Instead of dwelling on something negative (eg a disagreement), focus on the positive (eg what was agreed on), and what can be done (potential solutions, or compromises).
  2. Increased Resilience - Life throws curveballs, but with a positive mindset, you can bounce back faster.  Instead of dwelling on setbacks, you see them as opportunities to learn and grow.  You can feel the emotion, let it go, and then focus on what can be learned, and what can be done going forward.
  3. Better Physical Health - Did you know your mindset can affect your body?  Research shows that positive thinkers have stronger immune systems, lower blood pressure, and even longer lifespans.  (And who doesn't want better health in addition to a more positive mindset?!)
  4. Stronger Relationships - Positive people attract positive energy.  When you approach life with an optimistic outlook, your relationships improve as people enjoy being around your uplifting presence.  It can be quite difficult to be around people who have a negative mindset.
  5. More Success - Whether it’s at work or in personal projects, positivity boosts your productivity, motivation, and creativity.  When you believe in your abilities, you’re more likely to take the steps needed to achieve your goals.  

How to Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Creating a positive mindset is a journey, but the great news is that you can start right now with some easy habits.

Practice Gratitude - Spend a few minutes each day reflecting on what you’re thankful for. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking, to what you already have, which instantly boosts positivity.  You can use a gratitude journal to jot down even the smallest things that make you smile.  This is a great practice – and Oprah Winfrey has spoken often about how it helps her keep a positive mindset.

  1. Surround Yourself with Positivity - The people you hang out with influence your mindset. Spend time with those who lift you up, and inspire you.  You’ll feel more empowered when you’re surrounded by like-minded, positive people.  And if you don't have many people like that, look for people who are - you could check out local groups, meetups, or even Facebook groups.  Or you could even start listening to positive podcasts - they're free, easy to listen to while travelling - and I know they made a great improvement in my outlook!  (Some positive podcasts are Oprah's Super Soul, the Mel Robbins podcast, and Vibrant Happy women with Dr Jen Riday.)
  2. Affirmations - Repeating positive affirmations each day can train your brain to think more positively.  Simple phrases like “I am capable”, or “I welcome happiness into my life”, can make a huge difference over time.  I have used positive affirmations for years, and found them very helpful - especially if I catch myself thinking something negative repeatedly.   It can be helpful to have some affirmations around your house, to remind you to say them often.
  3. Mindfulness and Meditation - Taking a few minutes each day to meditate, or practice mindfulness, helps clear your mind of negativity.  (I like to listen to meditations before sleep.)  By focusing on the present moment, you can let go of worries, and approach life with more peace.
  4. Positive Self-Talk - Catch yourself when negative thoughts start creeping in, and gently replace them with encouraging words.  Instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” try, “I’ll give it my best shot.”  The more you do this, the better it works.  You can ‘train’ your brain, using neuroplasticity (neural networks in the brain changing over time), to think more positively.
  5. Coloring for Mindfulness - Believe it or not, adult coloring is a great way to relax, and create a positive mindset.  It’s a simple, creative activity that calms the mind, and encourages mindfulness, helping you focus on the beauty around you.
