Exploring Spirituality - A Gentle Path to Meaning and Connection
May 03, 2025
Spirituality can mean different things to different people, and there is no 'right' or 'wrong'. This blog post discusses various aspects and questions in relation to spirituality - although ultimately, it is up to each person to decide their own interpretation. In addition to deciding your own definition of spirituality, you also get to decide how you can use it to help you connect more deeply with yourself, and the world around you (and beyond).
At some point, you may have wondered if there’s more to life than just going through the motions. Maybe you’ve caught yourself wondering, ‘What’s my purpose?’ or ‘Why am I here?’ I know I’ve wondered about this many times over the years. (I even considered studying psychology or philosophy at one point.)
These quiet questions are often the beginning of a spiritual journey. It can be helpful to explore these questions (when you're ready), and develop your own spiritual beliefs, to help you expand and deepen your own sense of self, your own personal beliefs, and create your own relationship with the world. This allows you to connect with (or uncover) your true essence, and your soul, which can add more meaning to your experience on Earth - perhaps by connecting more deeply to nature and the people around you, and developing a stronger sense that 'all is one', and that we are all inter-connected on Earth at the end of the day.
Spirituality isn’t about rules, or following a strict path. It’s more about your personal connection with something bigger than yourself. For some, that ‘something’ might be nature, the universe, a sense of inner peace, or a higher power. For others, it’s about understanding who they really are, and how they want to show up in the world. And yet others find their spirituality in religion — with or without the various obligations that some religions have in place.
If you have an open mind, and would like to explore what spirituality can look like — in a gentle, open, and easy way — please keep reading this short introduction to exploring spirituality.
- Spirituality Is Personal
There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to spirituality. Some people find it in prayer, others in meditation, yoga, journaling, or simply spending quiet time in nature. What matters most is that you feel a sense of peace, connection, or meaning.
It’s not about doing it ‘right.’ It’s about what feels true for you.
- It’s About Asking Questions, Not Having All the Answers
Spirituality invites curiosity. It’s okay not to know everything. To get started, you might ask:
- Who am I, really?
- What lights me up?
- How can I live with more love, kindness, and purpose?
You could explore these questions (and others) in a journal (whether online or physical). There are also some great podcasts, and books around, which can initiate more ideas for consideration - what do you think of their spiritual beliefs, and do they feel true for me? This can form part of the ongoing journey. I am always open to exploring new ideas and concepts, and after reflection, may adjust, deepen, or broaden my own spiritual beliefs (whether I agree with them or not is not the point - it's the reflection and consideration and forming your own beliefs that is important.)
If you write about spirituality in a journal, you have a record of your thoughts and insights, which can change over time, and reflect and grow. It can be a fun exercise to review at a later date, and see how your beliefs about spirituality have changed over time with further input and reflection.
This exploration can lead to beautiful discoveries. And remember, the questions don’t have to be answered all at once — or ever. We can take our time, explore various questions, talk with friends and other people that we meet, and enjoy the journey. The journey is the point.
- Connection Is Key
Many people find that spirituality helps them feel more connected — to themselves, to others, and to the world around them. You might notice that you feel more peaceful after a walk in nature, a deep conversation, or a moment of stillness. These small moments of connection can be spiritual, too.
A number of people feel connected spiritually while doing something artistic like painting, or writing. (Oprah Winfrey has done a lot of interviews around spirituality on her podcast 'SuperSoul', which discusses this.) I feel spiritually connected while walking in nature, especially in big parks and rain-forests, while a number of my friends feel that way near the ocean.
- It Can Be Comforting in Tough Times
Life isn’t always easy. Spiritual beliefs can provide some gentle support during hard times.
I remember when I was young asking my Grandma about her beliefs, and why she believed in God. She said because it brought her comfort. I thought that was fair enough, so I dropped the topic.
A spiritual belief can help us trust that we’re not alone, that there’s something guiding us, or that challenges have meaning, even when we can’t see it yet.
- There’s No Rush
You don’t need to read a hundred books, or meditate for an hour a day. Start where you are, and take your time. Try little things that help you feel grounded and uplifted — lighting a candle, walking in nature, listening to music that moves you, writing in a journal, or simply breathing deeply and being present.
If you need a little more, try a popular easy-to-read book that covers spirituality, and see what resonates with you. What did you like? What did you not like? (Louise L. Hay 'You Can Heal Your Life' is a classic that is still very popular - I love it.)
A Few Simple Ways to Explore Spirituality
- Sit quietly for a few minutes each day, and notice how you feel.
- Go for a walk in nature, and (mindfully) notice the sights, sounds, and smells.
- Write down what you’re grateful for.
- Ask yourself gentle questions like, ‘What matters most to me today?’
- Try a guided meditation, or breathing practice.
- Spend time with people who lift your spirit.

How Spirituality Can Help You Live Your Best Life
When you connect with your spiritual side, life can start to feel more meaningful, peaceful, and joyful. That’s because spirituality helps you tune in to what truly matters — your values, your purpose, and your inner wisdom.
It reminds you that you are more than your to-do list, or what others expect from you. You're a whole, beautiful being, with your own path to walk.
Spirituality can guide you to:
- Make choices that align with your heart (and your values)
- Let go of stress and overwhelm more easily
- Build deeper, more loving relationships
- Appreciate the little things
- Feel connected to something greater, even on the hard days
Living your Best Life isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being real, feeling fulfilled, and walking through life with clarity and confidence. Spirituality can gently light that path.
Final Thoughts
Exploring spirituality doesn’t have to be serious or complicated. It’s really about tuning in to what brings you peace, joy, and meaning. Whether you call it spirituality, soul work, or simply ‘being true to yourself,’ it’s all valid.
Trust your journey. Go at your own pace. Explore, and have fun. Reflect. The most important thing is that it feels right for you.
