Chakras for Beginners: How to Balance Your Energy & Feel Better
May 28, 2025
Have you ever felt ‘off balance’ or like your energy was just… stuck? You might have heard people talk about ‘chakras’ and how they affect your mood, health, and even your sense of purpose. But what exactly are chakras — and why do they matter?
This article will discuss chakras, where they come from, and how they can help us live our Best Life, in a simple and easy-to-understand way.
๐ What Are Chakras?
The word chakra means ‘wheel’ in Sanskrit. Chakras are believed to be energy centers in your body. Imagine them like spinning wheels that keep your physical, emotional, and spiritual energy flowing smoothly.
There are seven main chakras, and each one is linked to a different part of your body and life. When your chakras are ‘open’ or balanced, you feel well and happy. When they’re ‘blocked’ or out of balance, you might feel tired, stressed, or stuck. No matter where you feel your chakras fall in this spectrum, there are ways to help clear and re-balance them. ๐
๐๏ธ A Little History: Where Do Chakras Come From?
Chakras come from ancient Indian spiritual traditions. The idea of chakras was first mentioned thousands of years ago, in old texts called the Vedas. These are some of the oldest writings in the world, and are the foundation of yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda (the traditional healing system of India).
In these traditions, chakras are seen as powerful energy centers that connect the body, mind, and spirit. Over time, different cultures added their own understanding of chakras. Today, many people around the world — whether spiritual or not — use chakra practices to support their wellbeing.
What’s the Link with Yoga?
Yoga is not just about stretching — it's also about connecting with your inner self, and balancing your energy. Each yoga pose (called an asana) can help open and support a different chakra. For example, heart-opening poses like cobra or camel can help with the Heart Chakra, while standing poses like mountain or warrior help you feel grounded, and support the Root Chakra. (And no, you don’t need to know these yoga poses in order to clear or balance your chakras – yoga is one way to help balance and clear chakras, but it’s not the only way.)
For those who do do yoga (or have done it), when you’re doing yoga, you’re not just moving your body — you’re also helping your energy flow freely around your body, and focusing your mind.
๐ก Why Are Chakras Important?
Chakras help manage the energy that flows through you. Just like your heart pumps blood and your lungs help you breathe, chakras keep your life energy (sometimes called prana or chi) moving. Energy, like blood, can sometimes get ‘stuck’ so it is helpful to balance your energy, so it is flowing freely.
When your chakras are balanced, and your energy is flowing freely, you may feel more calm, confident, and connected.

๐งโ๏ธ How Can You Balance Your Chakras?
There are a few gentle ways you can help bring your chakras back into balance. I like all the tools below, and have used each of them to help balance my chakras.
- Meditation – Quiet time can help bring awareness to your energy centers, and where you feel out of balance. Bringing you energy and focus to the chakras can be very soothing. There are some guided meditations to heal with rebalancing chakras, which can be fun.
- Yoga – Certain poses help open different chakras (eg. corpse pose/Savasana for crown chakra, or child’s pose/Balasana for third eye). There are also some yoga classes designed to focus on either particular chakras, or all of them, in some instances.
- Breathing Exercises – Deep breathing (like box breathing) helps energy flow. It also helps relax the body, and with a little focus, can also help rebalance chakras.
- Crystals or Essential Oils – Some people use these to support chakra healing. I've done crystal healing with different colored crystals on the relevant color chakra of the person who is lying down. It was very popular to help calm and rebalance people.
- Journaling – Writing about your feelings helps unblock stuck energy (in addition to helping 'untangle' your mind). If you have some emotions to release, journaling is a great way to do that. Exercise is another great way to clear emotions (and stop the energy from getting 'stuck').
- Walking in Nature – Especially grounding for the Root Chakra. Gardening is also incredibly helpful in grounding, and allowing nature to help heal us.
You don’t need to do everything — just start with what feels good to you.
๐ How Chakras Can Help You Live Your Best Life
When your chakras are balanced, life just feels easier. You may notice you sleep better, handle stress more calmly, and feel more connected to your purpose. Instead of feeling stuck or confused, you feel more ‘you.’
Each chakra relates to a certain aspect of life. There’s obviously a lot more to it than mentioned in this blog, however a quick overview on the various chakras and how they can help you live your Best Life, is found below.
- Grounded Strength – A steady Root Chakra helps you feel safe, secure, and supported in everyday life.
- Creative Flow – A balanced Sacral Chakra helps you enjoy life, and embrace your creativity, and feelings of self-worth in relation to pleasure.
- More Confidence – A balanced Solar Plexus Chakra helps you believe in yourself, and go after your goals.
- Deeper Relationships – An open Heart Chakra helps you give and receive love more easily.
- True Expression – A healthy Throat Chakra helps you speak your truth kindly and clearly.
- Clear Direction – A strong Third Eye Chakra helps you trust your gut, and make better decisions.
- Inner Peace – When your Crown Chakra is aligned, you feel connected to something greater, and less alone.
By exploring your chakras, you can learn more about who you are, and what you need. You stop running on empty, and start living with more love, clarity, and energy – all of which help you live your Best Life.
