Structured Water Benefits (And Why Everyone’s Talking About It)!
Jan 08, 2025
We all know we need to stay hydrated for optimal functioning - of our mind, and our body. Up to 60% of the human body is water, with various parts being different percentages, according to the USGS government website. (More information can be found in the link at the end of this article.)
So water is essential for life. We all know it — we need water to stay hydrated, keep our bodies working, and feel and live our Best Life. But have you heard of structured water? It's been a hot topic lately in wellness circles, and some people claim it's the best kind of water you can drink.
I first heard of this many years ago, when a scientist friend told me about it. While I didn’t understand the intricacies of the science behind it (I also didn’t try very hard) – I understood the basic concept, and decided to try it myself, and then make up my own mind (rather than rely on other people telling me what to think).
I’ve included some information on structured water, so you have a starting point in case it comes up in conversation, or you are intrigued, and want to try it for yourself. As mentioned, I tend to think of my own experiences, take various aspects into account, and make up my own mind.
What Is Structured Water?
Structured water, also called hexagonal water or living water, is said to be water that is in its most natural and pure state. This type of water is believed to form hexagonal clusters, making it more similar to the water found in nature — like in fresh springs or waterfalls. (Which is what my friend explained to me all those years ago – and as I’ve drunk from many fresh creeks, rivers, waterfalls etc, I understood what he meant.)
Some experts say that structured water is more easily absorbed by our cells, meaning it can hydrate us better than regular tap or bottled water. It’s often compared to how fruits and vegetables hold water in their natural form — it’s believed to be more "alive" and beneficial to our bodies.
How Does Water Get Structured?
As my friend explained, water can become structured through natural movement, like when it flows over rocks in a stream, or falls from a waterfall. There are also devices on the market that are designed to restructure water at home. Some people even say you can make water more structured by simply stirring it in a circular motion, or blessing it with positive intentions. While this would never hurt (after all, the Pope blesses things a lot, and that is what is done when people say grace before eating), I haven’t tried it myself, so can’t comment on the efficacy.
While there’s still some debate in the scientific world about structured water, many people swear by its benefits.
My friend had a portable travel device that he took with him when he visited friends. After he told me about it, I tried the water after it had gone through the device, and could taste the difference. I could also ‘feel’ the difference - it ‘felt’ easier to drink, and more hydrating. I know that sounds weird (I thought it was weird when he told me), however, based on my own experiences, I liked the taste and the feel of the water, so decided to buy my own travel device. I have been using this device, and drinking structured water, ever since (I just looked up my receipt, and I bought it in 2020).
I think everyone who has tasted it (using my device) can taste and/or feel the difference, too. So it’s not just me and my imagination! 😊🤣 (And yes, most of them were as skeptical as I was before I tried it.)
Potential Benefits of Structured Water
So now you know what is, and my experience, this is what proponents of structured water have said about it.
- Better Hydration
Since structured water is believed to be more easily absorbed by our cells, it may hydrate you more efficiently. Proper hydration helps with everything — from energy levels to clearer skin to better digestion.
- Increased Energy
Some people report feeling more energized after drinking structured water. It makes sense — if your cells are better hydrated, your body works more efficiently, which can help you feel more alive and alert.
- Detoxification Support
Structured water is thought to help the body flush out toxins more effectively. Staying hydrated is key to helping your kidneys and liver do their job, and structured water might give that process an extra boost.
- Improved Digestion
Better hydration means better digestion. Structured water may help keep things moving smoothly in your digestive system, reducing issues like bloating and constipation.
- Balanced pH Levels
Some people claim that structured water helps balance the body’s pH levels, making it less acidic, and more alkaline. This balance is thought to support overall health and wellbeing.
Any Drawbacks?
While structured water sounds great, it’s important to look at both sides. Here are some potential drawbacks to keep in mind when considering structured water.
- Lack of a Substantial Amount of Scientific Proof
The biggest issue with structured water is the lack of a substantial body of scientific evidence to back up its claims. While there are some studies, some experts say more research is needed to fully understand its benefits, and confirm current research.
- Cost of Bigger Devices
Devices that are attached to your taps at home, and are designed to structure water, can be pricey. If you’re buying a device to make structured water, you might be spending more money than you would on regular filtered water.
Having said that, I bought a portable device (around AUD260 in 2020), and it’s still going strong after almost daily use all these years later. To me, it was well worth it. (I also filter the water prior to running it through the water structuring device.)
- Potentially Overhyped Claims
As with any marketing claim, you need to view it with a critical eye. I considered what was said, what they were doing to the water, how it tasted, and the difference I felt when drinking the water.
I made the (personal) decision that it tasted better, was easier to drink, and could potentially help my health, so bought the travel version of the water device to structure water. Everyone has their own circumstances, their own priorities, and can make their own decision. What is right for one person may not be the best decision for someone else.
I’ve been using it almost daily for a number of years now, and am still happy with it. I don’t carry it around with me, but I do miss it and taste the difference when I drink unstructured water.
Should You Try Structured Water?
If you’re curious about structured water, there’s no harm in giving it a try. This will obviously depend on your own priorities, and your personal circumstances. For some people, it will be worth trying — for others, it won’t be worth it. If it is something that appeals to you, you might like to try a travel version of the water structuring device like I did — or even ask around it anyone else has a device that you can try first.
Even if structured water isn’t the miracle cure some make it out to be, staying well-hydrated with clean (filtered) water is always a good idea. And at least now, you know what it is! 😊
At the end of the day, water is essential for life. Whether you prefer tap, filtered, spring, or structured water, the most important thing is to drink enough of it every day. Your body will thank you!
Final Thoughts - Living Your Best Life with Water
Water plays a huge role in our health and wellbeing. While structured water is an interesting concept, the key takeaway is to drink water, stay hydrated, and pay attention to how your body feels. Whether or not structured water is your thing, staying mindful of your hydration is a simple way to boost your health and live your Best Life.
So, grab a glass of water — structured or not — and toast to your health! Cheers to living your Best Life!

- How do you make structured water at home?
You can make structured water at home by stirring your water in a circular motion (for quite a while - and I haven't used this method, so can't comment on its effectiveness), using special devices available on the market, or by drinking natural spring water.
- Is there scientific proof that structured water is better?
There is some debate in the scientific community about structured water. While some studies suggest potential benefits, more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness in various circumstances, and to the satisfaction of scientists.
- Can structured water help with hydration?
Yes, many people believe structured water hydrates more efficiently, because it’s more easily absorbed by the cells in our body.
- Are there any risks to drinking structured water?
There are no known risks to drinking structured water. The structure is supposed to be the same as flowing water in nature, which people have been drinking for centuries.
- Can structured water improve energy levels?
Some people report feeling more energized after drinking structured water, possibly due to better hydration.
- How much does structured water cost?
The cost can vary. If you’re buying a device to structure water, it can be pricey. Again, it is an individual decision, based on your own priorities and circumstances.

No, structured water and alkaline water are different. Alkaline water focuses on pH levels (acidity), while structured water is about the molecular structure of the water.
- Can I get structured water naturally?
Yes, natural spring water, or water from waterfalls is believed to be naturally structured.
- Is structured water safe for everyone?
Yes, structured water is generally safe for everyone to drink. Just be mindful of the source, and ensure the water is clean and safe.
