If you’re looking for a simple, natural way to support your skin, hair, and overall wellbeing, hexane-free castor oil may be exactly what you need. Nowadays wellness products and rituals can feel confusing and overwhelming — yet this gentle, multi-purpose oil offers a clean and nourishing option that has been used for decades.
In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of hexane-free castor oil, how it supports your body, and how it can help you feel more balanced, calm, and connected — so you can start creating a life that feels good from the inside out.

Have you been feeling a little out of balance lately? Perhaps you have a low energy, dry skin, sluggish digestion, or just 'not quite yourself'. If so, today’s topic, focusing on a natural oil that has been used for many decades, may be of interest.
Many of us are looking for simple, natural ways to feel better in our bodies… without adding more overwhelm. (I've spent so much time over the years analysing what ingredients are helpful, yet without being harmful — especially as I have such sensitive skin. And I've also read some suggestions that would take a long time each day — which usually means that I'll give it up after a short time, as it's too hard or time-consuming.) I'm more interested in easy, simple rituals using natural (or safe, well-researched) products where possible.
Castor oil is a well-known oil that has been around for years. It’s been used for generations as a gentle, supportive remedy — and when you choose hexane-free castor oil, the benefits can feel even more aligned with your health and values.
We’ll discuss the pros and cons in this article, in a simple, easy to understand format.
Castor oil is a thick, nourishing oil made from the seeds of the castor plant.
It’s rich in a unique fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, which is known for its soothing, cleansing, and supportive properties.
People use it both topically (on the skin) and sometimes internally (with proper guidance), but it’s most loved for its gentle external benefits. (I remember having a teaspoon of castor oil regularly as a child — which involved lots of protests and pulling faces!)
Here’s something many people don’t realise…
Some castor oils are processed using a chemical called hexane, which is used to extract more oil from the seeds. (For more on Hexane, please see the reference section below.)
While this makes production cheaper, it can leave behind trace residues — and for many people, that doesn’t feel aligned with a clean, natural lifestyle. (And as I have sensitive skin, I try to avoid chemicals when I can — especially on my face. Walking around with a red, inflamed face is not fun.)
Hexane-free castor oil, on the other hand, is:
Cold-pressed (no harsh chemicals)
Less processed
Closer to its natural state
More aligned with holistic living
If you’re someone who values what you put in and on your body, this small choice can feel really empowering.

While castor oil is natural and gentle for many people, it’s still important to use it with care. Some people may experience skin irritation or breakouts, especially if too much is used, or if their skin is sensitive (like mine), so always start with a small amount, and do a patch test first. (Sometimes oils can also build a sensitivity over time, so please take that into account as well, and monitor how your body reacts.)
Castor oil can also be harmful to pets, so be aware of this as well.
If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or are taking medication, it’s best to check with a healthcare professional before using castor oil — especially internally. Castor oil packs may not be suitable during pregnancy or for certain health conditions. Listening to your body and taking a gentle, mindful approach can help you use castor oil safely, and in a way that truly supports your wellbeing. If in any doubt, please check with your health professional before using.
As mentioned earlier, castor oil has been used for centuries. While scientists would like additional research done before recommending it, Ayurveda medicine (in India) traditionally uses it.
A few potential uses (again, consider your own health and body before using) are mentioned below.
1. Deep Nourishment for Skin
If your skin has been feeling dry, irritated, or tired, castor oil can be a helpful support as part of your health and beauty routine.
Castor oil may help your skin:
Lock in moisture
Support skin repair
Leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated
Many people also use it to support the appearance of:
Fine lines
Uneven texture
Dull skin

2. Supports Hair Growth and Strength
While there are dangers to using a thick oil directly on hair, potentially a little castor oil can be mixed with a conditioning treatment, and left on the hair. I had a girls’ night the other night, and I mixed a small amount of hexane-free castor oil in with a great conditioner I have, and then applied it to my hair while we watched a movie. It worked really well, and my hair feels better for it. (A word of warning here: apparently if used alone on hair, it can on occasion get tangled, to the extent that the hair needs to be cut! So please be cautious, and always mix it with something else — and maybe check with your hairdresser too.)
There are also reports of people using it on eyebrows and eyelashes (with a mascara wand).
Having said all that, castor oil may be used to:
Nourish the scalp
Support healthier-looking hair
Add shine and thickness
Consistency is helpful here — but over time, you may notice stronger, fuller-looking hair. (I haven’t been using it regularly enough to comment here — but the one time I did, I found it to be helpful.)
3. Gentle Support for Digestion (When Used Traditionally)
Traditionally, in Ayurveda medicine, castor oil has been used to support digestion, and relieve occasional constipation.
However, this should always be approached with care and proper medical guidance.
For many people, a more gentle and modern approach is using castor oil packs over the abdomen.
4. Castor Oil Packs for Rest and Reset
Castor oil is a great tool to help with rest and relaxation, with the potential benefits of a gentle helping hand with digestion and a detox.
A castor oil pack involves applying the castor oil to a (skin-friendly) cloth, putting it on your abdomen while lying down, and resting with it. You can also add a hot water bottle on top for warmth and better absorption. You might even like to put on some relaxing music, and have some essential oils in the background, to incorporate more of our senses. It’s a great way to give yourself permission to pause and relax.
People use this practice to:
Support relaxation
Help the body feel less heavy or sluggish
Encourage a sense of internal “reset”
It’s also a beautiful ritual for slowing down — something many of us deeply need.

5. Supports Lymphatic Flow
Your lymphatic system helps your body clear waste, and stay balanced. The body needs to regularly clear in order to function and feel its best. Castor oil can assist with this.
Castor oil is often used (especially in packs or massage) to:
Support natural flow
Reduce feelings of puffiness or stagnation
When your body feels supported, you often feel lighter — physically and emotionally.
6. A Simple Way to Reduce Overwhelm
I’m sure you’ve felt that wellness can feel overwhelming sometimes, with so many products and specific ways in which to use (and not use) each one. (Do this before that, but not if you’re using this as they interact badly, etc.)
And once you’ve selected some products to try, you have to actually use them. So many products. So many opinions. And it can take so much time – working out which products work together, whether you’re allergic to any of them, whether they need to be kept in the fridge or not, etc.
That’s what I like about castor oil. Castor oil is:
Simple
Multi-purpose
Affordable
Easy to use
Instead of adding more to your routine, it can actually simplify it.
And I love simple, easy routines that are able to fit into a busy schedule.
As with any changes to your health and wellness routine, start slowly and small, and check how your body reacts (and seek professional advice if you have any questions or concerns).
A few simple ideas to get you started include:
Apply a small amount to dry skin before bed (test a small patch first – I used it sparingly on my face when I had a girls’ night in, and my sensitive skin was ok with it)
Mix it in with conditioning treatment for some additional moisture in your hair (I also did this on my girls’ night in, and it worked well)
Try a castor oil pack while relaxing or journaling (I haven’t done this yet, but would like to in the future)
As always: Start small. Listen to your body. Let it be a gentle experience.
When buying castor oil, it’s best to avoid those with hexane used in the processing. You want something that’s clean and good quality.
Consider and look for these aspects when buying castor oil:
Hexane-free
Cold-pressed
Organic (if possible)
Stored in a dark glass bottle
This helps ensure you’re getting a clean, high-quality product.

Using a simple hexane-free castor oil as part of your wellness routine can be a small but meaningful step toward living your Best Life.
Adding some moisture to your hair (with a mix of conditioning treatment and castor oil), some additional moisture to your skin, and relaxing with a caster oil/heat pack combination, are all simple yet potentially helpful steps in your health and wellness journey.
Also, when you use a product that is clean, natural, and aligned with your values, it creates a sense of trust and respect for your body. It feels good to use products that you know are natural, and good for body and health.
Whether you’re using it to nourish your skin, support your body, or create a quiet self-care ritual, it can become a moment of connection with yourself. And those small, caring choices add up, helping you feel more grounded, supported, and empowered to live a life that feels good from the inside out.
Sometimes, living your Best Life isn’t about doing more.
It can be about simplifying, and/or using natural products to support your body. It can be helped by making small, meaningful steps in the direction you want to live.
Choosing hexane-free castor oil can be one of those small shifts. It supports your body.
It aligns with your values. And it creates space for simple, nourishing rituals in your day.
Because at the end of the day, you deserve to feel good — in your body, your energy, and your life.
1. What is hexane-free castor oil?
Hexane-free castor oil is castor oil that has been extracted without using chemical solvents like hexane. It is usually cold-pressed, which means it stays closer to its natural, pure state. This makes it a cleaner, and more gentle option for your body and skin.
2. Why should I choose hexane-free castor oil?
Many people choose hexane-free castor oil because it feels safer, and more aligned with a natural lifestyle. It avoids potential chemical residues, and gives you peace of mind, especially if you are trying to reduce toxins in your daily routine.
3. What are the main benefits of castor oil?
Castor oil is known to:
Deeply moisturise dry skin (check for sensitivity first, and seek professional advice if you have questions or health concerns)
Support healthy-looking hair and scalp (when used in moderation, and with other products and due diligence)
Help the body feel less heavy or sluggish (if used for digestion – a castor oil pack may help here)
Support relaxation when used in a castor oil pack
It’s a simple, multi-purpose product that can support your wellbeing in different ways.
4. How do I use castor oil safely?
Start small and keep it simple:
Apply a small amount to your skin and see how it feels
Use it occasionally for hair or scalp, being careful around how much you use, and what products you might like to mix it with eg. conditioning treatment for hair
Try a castor oil pack for relaxation
Always do a patch test first to check for sensitivity, especially if you have sensitive skin.
5. Can castor oil help with hair growth?
I’ve heard that many people use castor oil to support thicker, healthier-looking hair – however, be aware that it can clump and tangle hair (to the extent it may need to be cut), so consider mixing it with a conditioning treatment. It can help nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair over time. Results can take time, so consistency and patience are important.
6. What is a castor oil pack and how do I use it?
A castor oil pack is when you apply castor oil to your abdomen (or another area), cover it with a cloth, and rest. Alternatively, you might like to add the castor oil to a skin-friendly cloth, put the cloth on your stomach, and add a hot water bottle over the top, to have a relaxing time with the added benefit of a gentle digestive boost.
This can help you slow down, unwind, and support your body in a gentle way.
7. How often should I use castor oil?
It depends on your needs, but most people use it:
Daily or a few times a week for skin (again, check your skin & sensitivity)
1–2 times a week for hair (ideally mix it with conditioner to avoid tangling it)
A few times a week for castor oil packs (if that works for your skin and digestive system)
Listen to your body and adjust as needed.
8. Are there any side effects?
Castor oil is generally safe when used externally, but some people may experience:
Skin irritation
Hair may tangle if used alone, to the extent it needs to be cut (best to add a small amount to a conditioner, like I did)
Breakouts (especially if too much is used)
To avoid this, use a small amount, and do a patch test first.
9. Why does castor oil feel sticky or thick?
Castor oil is naturally thick and rich, which is why it’s so nourishing. If it feels too heavy, you can mix it with a lighter oil (like coconut or jojoba oil) to make it easier to apply.
10. How do I choose the best castor oil?
Look for:
Hexane-free
Cold-pressed
Organic (if possible)
Stored in a dark glass bottle
This helps ensure you’re using a high-quality, clean product.
11. How long does it take to see results?
Some benefits, like softer skin, can be noticed quickly. Others, like healthier-looking hair, may take a few weeks or longer. The key is to stay consistent and patient.
12. Can I use castor oil if I have sensitive skin?
Yes, but start slowly. Do a patch test first and use a small amount. You can also mix it with another gentle oil (or cream) to reduce the intensity.
