Have you ever felt drained, stuck, or weighed down by certain people or relationships?  You might be carrying etheric or energetic cords — invisible threads that connect your energy to others.  While these cords are natural, some can leave you feeling tired, anxious, or emotionally stuck.  

Learning to release energetic cords can help you reclaim your energy, find emotional freedom, and step into a lighter, more joyful, and empowered life.  

In this post, we’ll explore what etheric cords are, how to recognize them, and simple ways to let go so you can live your Best Life.

How Invisible Energetic Ties Could Be Holding You Back

If you've ever felt drained after being around someone, or noticed that certain relationships leave you feeling heavy, anxious, or stuck — you might be experiencing the effects of etheric or energetic cords.

These invisible connections can carry emotions, thoughts, and energy between people — and while some may feel supportive, others may hold you back from living your Best Life.

I've been feeling this a lot lately, and thought it would be a great topic to discuss, as so many people are unaware of them, and therefore don't practice spiritual hygeine.

What Are Etheric (Energetic) Cords?

Etheric cords are like invisible threads of energy connecting you to others, places, or experiences.  Think of them as lifelines, carrying emotional and mental energy back and forth.

Healthy cords may feel nourishing — they can give you warmth, support, and shared joy. Unhealthy cords, on the other hand, can feel like invisible anchors.  They may leave you emotionally drained, anxious, or even stuck in old patterns and relationships.

These cords form naturally through human connection.  They often strengthen through shared experiences, emotions, and intimacy — but when left unchecked, they can become attachments that drain your energy instead of supporting it.

Some Signs That You Have Energetic Cords

While most people will have energetic cords (as they commonly link us with others), it’s not always easy to notice them.  Some tell-tale signs you have etheric cords are mentioned below.

  • Feeling emotionally drained after spending time with someone

  • Repeatedly thinking about a person or situation, even when you try not to

  • Feeling overly attached to someone’s approval or opinions

  • Emotional triggers that seem to happen over and over, despite you working on releasing them

  • Struggling to move on from past relationships or experiences

Cords can connect you to family members, old friends, ex-partners, co-workers, or even negative patterns and habits. They’re not necessarily inherently ‘bad’ (although one of my mentors thinks they should always be released), however being aware of them gives you the power to release what no longer serves you.  (After all, do you really want to carry around energetic ties to ex-partners, and people you are no longer friends with? Wouldn’t it be better to release them, so you can harness the full power of your mind, body, and soul to become who you want to be?)

Why Releasing Cords Matters

Releasing energetic cords isn’t about being unkind or abandoning someone — it’s about reclaiming your energy, and creating space for what truly matters.

When cords are released, your energy flows freely around and within your body, and you regain more control over your emotions, thoughts, and choices.  You stop being subconsciously tied to other people’s moods, past events, or old patterns.

There are a number of key benefits to this, including the following points.

  • Emotional freedom - You no longer feel pulled into someone else’s drama or energy.

  • Mental clarity - Decisions become easier because your mind isn’t clouded by old attachments.

  • More energy - Feeling drained after interacting with certain people can become a thing of the past.

  • Healthier relationships - You connect from a place of choice, not obligation, or attachment.

  • Stronger self-confidence - You feel more aligned with your own desires and values (rather than those of other people)

How to Release Etheric Cords

Releasing cords can be simple, gentle, and even empowering.  I’ve outlined some processes below that you can try, to see which ones resonate best with you. 

1. Awareness and Intention
Start by noticing which relationships or situations leave you feeling drained or stuck.  Set a clear intention (‘I am ready to release energy that no longer serves me’) to help with this.  (You might like to do this upon waking, before bed, or set aside a time to focus on it.)

2. Visualization (or Other Techniques that Work for You)
Imagine the cord connecting you to the person or situation.  Picture it gently dissolving, or being cut with love and gratitude, ensuring that each end is called back into the relevant person (like a vacuum cleaner power cord).  You can also visualize golden light filling the space left behind, so there is no void left behind (as nature hates an empty space, and tries to fill it).  (Note that if you struggle to visualise, you can just imagine it, feel it, or ‘know’ it is happening.)

3. Energy Healing Practices
Reiki, sound therapy, crystal healing, or meditation can all help cleanse and restore your energy field, and help release cords.  If you set the intention to cut cords (I prefer to dissolve them, so there is no chance that fragments are left behind), you can carry that with you during the above modality/ies and healing sessions.   I use all of the above to help me in energy cleansing and healing.

4. Grounding
Walk barefoot on grass, sit under a tree, or imagine roots connecting you to the Earth. Grounding helps release excess energy, and strengthens your own energetic field.   One of my favourite ways to cut energetic cords, is to put my hand/s on a tree, give it thanks and gratitude, and ask for its help in cutting all energetic cords.  This works brilliantly for me.

5. Journaling and Reflection
Writing about your emotions, experiences, and attachments helps you process feelings and gain clarity.  This can help you discover cords within you that need to be cleared.

  • Make aligned choices - Decisions feel clearer when you’re not subconsciously influenced by others’ energy or expectations.

Releasing cords also means creating healthy boundaries.  You don’t need to cut people out of your life entirely, however protecting your energy ensures you stay balanced and fulfilled. Saying no, limiting exposure to negativity, and choosing nourishing relationships are all part of maintaining energetic health.
