Holidays Season & Peace

Published: 5 November 2025

The holiday season is a time for giving, but it’s easy to get caught up in overspending and stress. This year, why not make a change and give gifts that are not only meaningful but also mindful of your budget?

In this post, we'll share smart tips on how to shop thoughtfully and spend wisely, so you can enjoy the holidays without the financial strain. Whether you're looking for personal, thoughtful gifts or just want to make sure your spending aligns with your values, this guide will help you create a joyful and stress-free holiday season.

Love & Peace for Holidays, Not Financial Stress

The holidays are meant to be filled with love, laughter, and connection — not guilt, stress, or that sinking feeling when your credit card bill arrives in January.

Yet for so many women, this season becomes a tug-of-war between wanting to give generously… and wanting to protect their peace (and their bank balance).

If you’ve ever said, ‘I’ll just get this one extra thing’ — only to realise you’ve spent far more than you meant to — know that a lot of other people have done the same thing (including me).  And sometimes this isn’t a great feeling when you get home – and discover you’ve already bought them something, or that overall you spent a lot more than you had intended to (or could easily afford — without compromising other goals such as a nice dinner out, or a planned holiday).

But the truth is that you can absolutely enjoy the holidays and stay true to your financial goals.  It just takes a little awareness, a touch of planning, and a lot of self-kindness.  (And yes, sometimes a little discipline as well – but the planning can help with that.)

Why We Overspend (and What’s Really Going On)

Many of us overspend during the holidays for deeply emotional reasons.

  • We want our loved ones to feel special.

  • We want to make up for lost time, or create perfect memories.

  • We might even want to soothe stress, guilt, or loneliness with ‘just one more gift.’

And as uncomfortable as we may feel (reading this, and at the time), it’s helpful to know.  Because in reality, love doesn’t have a price tag.  Presence means more than presents.  (Or it should, in a perfect world — obviously it depends on the people around us, and the relationships we have with them.)

Caroline Kennedy has a great quote about presence over presents over the holiday period.

“Sharing the holiday with other people, and feeling that you’re giving of yourself, gets you past all the commercialism.”

When we spend beyond our limits, we often trade short-term sparkle for long-term stress.  We feel better in the moment when we buy ‘that extra thing’ — however when we look at the overall amount that we’ve spent, we feel worse (and guilty over how much we spent, and sad we have to adjust other goals eg. dinner out, or a holiday, as a result).  Have you ever done this? I know I have, especially when I was younger. And that’s the opposite of living our Best Life.

A New Way to Approach Holiday Spending

Instead of cutting joy, we can simply consciously choose where our money flows.

Money is energy — it’s meant to support what matters most to you.  Ideally, we spend our money on things that bring us joy (or help us live well, such as living expenses).

There are things we can do to support this conscious choosing of where we spend our money — that help us align our money and our energy (i.e. mindful spending).

Before you pull out your wallet, take a deep breath and ask yourself:

💜  ‘Does this gift come from love, or from guilt?’

💜  ‘Will this add meaning to the season, or clutter to my mind?’

💜  ‘Am I honouring my values as well as my budget?’

These tiny pauses bring huge peace.  Try them this holiday season, and see the difference for yourself.  (And let me know how they worked for you!)

Your Free Holiday Gift Spending Plan Checklist

To make things easier, I’ve created a simple, two-page free Holiday Gift Spending Plan Checklist to help you stay mindful, calm, and clear.  You can use this checklist to set a budget (overall, and for individual people), and use it help you stay on track – by planning in advance, and taking advantage of any sales – and to help you avoid last-minute panic buys.

Use this free checklist to feel organised and relaxed throughout the season – knowing that you’re planning ahead, and spending mindfully.  It feels so good to spend what you budgeted for, and buy mindfully, with love – rather than buying in a last-minute stress rush, where you end up spending more than you intended.

It’s practical, gentle, and full of little reminders to help you spend from the heart — not from habit.

Want to Go Deeper?

If you’re ready to truly change your relationship with money — not just for the holidays, but for life — our Spending Awareness & Smart Shopping Journals are a great way to go within, and learn more about your spending habits, and the underlying thoughts and beliefs.

The Spending Awareness Journal offers the opportunity to go within, and uncover emotional triggers behind your spending habits.  Once you become aware of the emotions behind your spending, you can then start building more mindful money habits that align with your values.  (We also have a free mini-course, The Values Code: Unlocking Your Best Self, which helps you discover/update your personal values.)

This isn’t about restriction.  It’s about freedom — the kind that comes from knowing where your money goes, and how it supports your Best Life.  After all, imagine all your purchases were done mindfully, aligning your money with your values, and spend in conscious manner.  Imagine the peace and confidence you would feel – knowing you are on budget (whatever that may be), and there is no more stress around over-spending.

🙋 Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I stop myself from overspending during the holidays?
Start by setting a clear spending limit before you shop. Use your Holiday Gift Spending Plan Checklist to plan your gifts, so you can track your spending, and keep things realistic. When you notice the urge to buy more, pause and ask yourself why — awareness is everything.

2. How can I talk to family about spending less on gifts?
Be honest and kind. You might say, ‘This year I’m focusing on more meaningful, simple gifts.’  You could also suggest creative swaps like homemade treats, shared experiences, or Secret Santa.  Most people will appreciate your honesty, and probably feel relieved too.  (So many people now feel the stress of the holiday season, rather than the joy of being together, and sharing love and kindness and joy – without the need for expensive presents that we often pay for over the coming months.)

3. What if I’ve already overspent?

Don’t beat yourself up — awareness is the first step toward change. Use your The Spending Awareness & Smart Shopping Journals to reflect on what triggered your choices, and how you can adjust next time.  Be gentle with yourself - growth comes from compassion, not shame.

4. How can I make the holidays feel special without spending much?

Focus on connection, rather than consumption. Try writing heartfelt notes, creating handmade decorations, having a movie night, or cooking together.  Simple moments often become the most treasured memories.

5. How can I improve my money mindset for the long term?

Combine practical tools with mindset support. Journaling, mindful spending, and positive affirmations help — but if you want to go deeper, our Spending Awareness & Smart Shopping Journal Bundle, and Leonie Dawson’s Money, Manifesting & Multiple Streams of Income course are great ways to shift your energy around money, and open yourself up to more abundance.
