How to Find Peace and Power in the Middle of a Roadblock
Jul 02, 2025
Life has a funny way of throwing unexpected challenges our way. One minute, everything is running smoothly, and the next, you’re dealing with a lost file, a car that won’t start, a cancelled plan, or a stubborn software glitch that refuses to cooperate. (In the past month, I’ve had major car problems, been locked out of my website for a week with a software glitch, and am looking around for new business insurance as the old one doesn’t really suit my circumstances.)
Roadblocks — big or small — can be frustrating, especially when they mess with your plans, or slow you down. You might have worked out by now that roadblocks are a normal part of life. These obstacles will keep showing up, even when you’re on the path to living your Best Life. But the truth is, they don’t have to ruin your day. The trick is not letting them throw you off completely. Instead of feeling stuck, we’ll cover some ways to navigate challenges with a calm and positive mindset.
- Take a Deep Breath & Pause
Our first instinct when something goes wrong can be to panic. Our heart races, frustration kicks in, and we start spinning worst-case scenarios in our head. But reacting in the heat of the moment rarely helps. (Sometimes we even hold our breath – waiting for a reaction, or hoping you’re wrong. Depriving yourself of oxygen is rarely the answer!! š)
Instead, take a deep breath — literally. Inhale slowly, hold for a second, then exhale. Repeat a few times. If possible, step away for a moment. Grab a glass of water, just close your eyes for a second — or even take a short walk to clear your head. Remind yourself: This is just a temporary problem, and I can figure it out.
This small pause can help reset your nervous system, making it easier to think clearly and consider the problem carefully, and perhaps find a better solution.
- Identify the Real Problem & Break It Down
Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed because a problem seems bigger than it really is. The best way to tackle it is to break it down into smaller steps.
Ask yourself:
š¹ What exactly is the issue? (Be specific!)
š¹ What are my possible solutions? (Brainstorm — even small ideas count!)
š¹ What’s the first step I can take? (One small action can get the ball rolling.)
For example, let’s say your phone suddenly won’t turn on. Instead of freaking out, break it down.
ā
Check if it’s just out of battery.
ā
Try a different charger.
ā
Look up troubleshooting tips.
ā
Ask a tech-savvy friend, or visit a repair shop.
By focusing on what you can do instead of what’s wrong, you shift from frustration to problem-solving mode. The energy is different, as well as the mindset. And wouldn’t it be better to focus on what can be done, doing something, rather than being frustrated, and wasting energy and time?
š» Another example could be around your computer crashing, and losing an important document. There are a few steps you can take in this instance.
- Check the recycle bin or recent files.
- Try an auto-save recovery.
- Search online for solutions, or ask a tech-savvy friend.
One step at a time makes the problem feel more manageable.
- Change Perspective
It’s easy to get caught up in the frustration of a roadblock. Instead of focusing on the frustration, try asking, What is this situation teaching me? Maybe you lost your keys, and it’s a reminder to create a designated spot for them. Shifting your mindset can turn a roadblock into an opportunity.
What if, instead of seeing it as an obstacle, you saw it as an opportunity to learn, grow, or pivot?
Ask yourself:
- Is there something I can learn from this?
- Could this be guiding me toward something better?
- Will this matter a week from now? A month from now?
One example could be if you got a flat tyre, and you discovered you didn’t know how to change it, and you learned how; or you discovered the importance of servicing your car, or ensuring you change your tyres regularly. (I took my car in for a service the other week, and the mechanic showed me my 4 old tyres – all of them had cracks in them (some of them quite long!), which I didn’t see, as they were on the inside of the car. šØ I was horrified, but learned a good lesson – change them at least every 5 years!)
Or it could be something smaller, that you didn’t know you needed, but turns out for the best. For example, let’s say your friend cancels plans at the last minute. Instead of feeling upset, you could see it as a chance to have some much-needed alone time, catch up on a book, or do something spontaneous. That time alone might save you a few arguments the next day, as you feel less tired or overwhelmed; you could read a few pages of a book that changes your perspective on something, and reduces the anxiety you felt about a situation; or doing something fun could relax you when you really needed it. Or perhaps you went out and met someone, who turns out to be a significant person in your life going forward. Sometimes, setbacks open doors we wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
š¹ Lost an important document? Maybe it’s time to set up automatic backups.
š¹ A friend cancels last-minute? Maybe this is an opportunity for some much-needed me time.
š¹ Car won’t start? Maybe the universe is nudging you to slow down today.
When I was younger, I signed up for a Traditional Chinese Medicine course. It ended up being cancelled, and my money was refunded. I’m now working with healing still, but in a different format to what the Traditional Chinese Medicine would have been – and I’m absolutely fine with that. My current path allows me to explore a variety of modalities, which actually suits me really well.
Shifting your mindset won’t make the problem disappear, but it will help you handle it with less stress.
- Ask for Help
You don’t have to handle everything alone. If you’re stuck, reach out to someone who might have insight or experience around that problem. A fresh perspective can often bring a solution you hadn’t considered.
Not every problem needs to be solved alone. Whether it’s a tech glitch, a home repair issue, or an emotional setback, don’t hesitate to ask for help.
š¹ If your software isn’t working, check online forums, or reach out to customer support.
š¹ If your car won’t start, call a mechanic (or a friend who knows cars)!
š¹ If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a personal setback, talk to someone who will listen, and offer perspective.
People love to help, and sometimes, just talking it through with someone else makes the problem feel lighter. (It can also be an opportunity to deepen a relationship, as they can be happy to help, to see you, and feel flattered that you sought them out. They may have been feeling down or lonely, and you asking them for help can boost their spirits.)
Sometimes, just getting an outside perspective can make a huge difference.
- Give Yourself Grace, and Stay Flexible
Not everything goes according to plan, and that’s okay. Some roadblocks are completely out of your control, and beating yourself up won’t change the outcome. Other problems can take time, trial and error, or even a complete mindset shift. Remind yourself that setbacks happen to everyone. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.
Instead of beating yourself up, remind yourself:
ā
Everyone faces obstacles.
ā
You’re doing the best you can.
ā
You’ll figure it out, just like you have before.
I remember when I was learning to drive a manual car (stick shift), I kept getting frustrated, because I wasn’t learning fast enough (to my mind). I was aware of how easy it could be (watching my parents drive them), however, I didn’t find it as easy. My instructor reminded me that it takes time, and they have been driving them for years. I did learn (and drove a manual car for years), however it felt like it took a long time to get there.
Being kind to yourself during tough moments makes it easier to move forward with confidence. The more flexible you are, the easier it is to roll with the changes and keep moving forward.
- Take a Break If Needed
When a problem feels impossible to solve, sometimes the best thing to do is step away for a moment or two. Step outside for fresh air, do a five-minute meditation, play some uplifting music, or even just move around.
Stepping away for a bit allows your brain to reset, and think about something else, which often leads to new solutions, or fresh ideas. Sometimes, the answer comes right when you stop forcing it. And even if a new solution isn’t immediately available, at least you might feel better prepared to handle it.
I find that if you can sleep on it, as ask your subconscious for help, you often wake up with the answer. Depending on your spiritual beliefs, you could also for spiritual help, too.

š FAQ - Handling Life’s Roadblocks
1. What should I do if I feel completely stuck, and don’t know what to do next?
First, take a deep breath, and step away for a moment. A short break can help clear your mind. Then, break the problem into smaller parts, and focus on just one small step at a time. If you’re still stuck, ask for help — someone else might have a solution you haven’t thought of.
2. How can I stop myself from panicking when things go wrong?
The best thing you can do is pause, and breathe. Try a simple breathing exercise like box breathing — inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold again for 4 seconds. This helps calm your nervous system, so you can think more clearly.
3. What if my problem doesn’t have an easy or quick fix?
Some problems take time, and that’s okay. If you can’t solve it immediately, focus on what you can control — your mindset, your response, and any small steps forward. Remember, patience and persistence often lead to the best solutions.
4. What if I keep facing the same type of roadblock over and over?
If a certain problem keeps popping up, it might be time to look at the bigger picture. Ask yourself:
š¹ Is there a pattern?
š¹ Is there a way to prevent this from happening again?
š¹ What lesson can I take from this?
For example, if you keep losing important files, maybe it’s time to set up automatic backups. If you often run late because of unexpected delays, maybe adding extra buffer time to your schedule could help.
5. How can I stay positive when things go wrong?
It’s normal to feel frustrated at first, but shifting your mindset helps. Instead of asking, ‘Why is this happening to me?’, try asking, ‘What can I learn from this?’ or ‘How can I handle this in a calm way?’ Over time, these small mindset shifts can make a big difference in how you handle challenges.
6. How can the Positive Mindset Mastery Bundle help me with roadblocks?
The Positive Mindset Mastery Bundle gives you the tools to reframe challenges, build resilience, and handle setbacks with confidence. There are ebooks, an audio guide, meditation, affirmations, a journal, and a workbook — all designed to help you navigate obstacles with a clear, positive mindset.
