I’m Eva—a passionate advocate for fitness, mindfulness, and the endless pursuit of a fulfilling life. One of my favourite places to reconnect with nature and recharge my soul is the Lake District in the UK. The stunning views, serene lakes, and endless trails always feel like a breath of fresh air for my body and mind. It’s my go-to spot for hiking and paddle boarding (SUP- Stand Up Paddle boarding), a place where mindfulness and movement come together perfectly.

On one of my paddle boarding adventures, I noticed kayaks gliding gracefully across the water. Watching them sparked a spontaneous idea—why not try kayaking? The thought was exhilarating. I’ve always been someone who craves discovery and thrives on adventure. For me, trying new activities isn’t just about having fun; it’s about creating the best version of myself. Every new challenge, every skill learned, and every joyful moment feeds into a life of purpose and fulfillment.

That day, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and give kayaking a go. What I found was not just a new hobby, but an entirely new way to connect with nature, boost my physical fitness, and embrace mindfulness in motion. Kayaking taught me the beauty of being present, the joy of exploring new waters (literally and figuratively), and the power of adventure to transform our lives.

Now, before you think I’m some kind of pro out here training for the Olympics—no, my friends, I’m absolutely not. I’m just someone who loves trying new things for fun and the occasional challenge! And in case you’re wondering, I don’t even own any kayaking gear. I rent everything out for a couple of hours whenever I feel up to it. It keeps things simple, flexible, and hassle-free—perfect for someone who loves spontaneity as much as I do.

So, if you’re considering giving kayaking a try, know this: you don’t need to be a professional or invest in tons of equipment. All you need is a sense of adventure, a willingness to try something new, and maybe a bit of humour when you accidentally paddle in circles (been there, done that).

Life is too short not to embrace new adventures, so grab a paddle, rent a kayak, and see where the waters take you, and who knows? Kayaking might just become your new favourite escape.

Safety First: Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and check weather conditions before heading out. If you’re like me and prefer to rent your kayak, you’ll usually find that a PFD is included in the rental, making it even easier to stay safe while you enjoy your adventure.

Learn Proper Technique: A strong paddle stroke not only saves energy but also helps prevent strain and keeps you moving smoothly on the water. If you’re renting a kayak, most rental places provide a quick introduction or basic instructions on paddling techniques, so you can get started confidently and safely.

Start Small: Practice on calm waters before tackling rivers or open seas. Personally, I still prefer the tranquility of calm lakes for now—it’s the perfect setting to build confidence and enjoy the peaceful vibe. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll feel ready to take on the adventure of a river, but for now, lakes are my happy place!

Gear Up: Invest in a lightweight kayak and an adjustable paddle for a smooth and enjoyable experience. That said, like I mentioned earlier, it’s worth considering how often you’ll be kayaking. If it’s something you’re planning to dive into seriously as a new project, investing in your own gear might be a great idea. But if you’re like me and only kayak a couple of times a year, renting is a hassle-free and budget-friendly option!

Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water and some snacks to keep your energy up—paddling works up an appetite! Trust me, there’s nothing worse than realising you’re miles from shore and hangry. A granola bar and a bottle of water can be lifesavers (and keep you paddling happily instead of dreaming about lunch).
